Earlier this week, we began a discussion of CTCSS, an acronym for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System. Today we will examine the practical application of CTCSS. Before the concept of trunked radio user groups and push-to-talk (PTT) over cellular, many users purchased portable radios and shared airtime over a given RF channel, which usually was owned and licensed by a local radio shop.

CTCSS, DCS, "PL tones", privacy codes What does it all mean for you and your radio? CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch Systems) aka "Tone Access" or "PL" CTCSS 1.01 - the very basics (Jim, KC9HI) Many repeaters have a LOCK on their receiver to keep unwanted interference from getting in (Lock = receive CTCSS tone). If it does, your radio needs to transmit the matching KEY to enter. (Key = transmit CTCSS tone). Effects of CTCSS/DCS privacy codes?

Digital Coded Squelch (DCS) is somewhat similar, but instead of sending a continuous tone of differing frequency, a Digital data transmission is added to the radio signal. This Digital Code is transmitted at a really low rate, around 134 bits per second (the code is 23 bits long). DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) is digital data or code word that is transmitted with the voice audio. This data is sub-audible with most of it's energy below 300Hz. However is does have a wide bandwidth from 2 to 300 Hz. Unlike CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) which uses continuous tones below 300 Hz., DCS uses digital data or code words. CTCSS = Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System CTCSS brand names: Private-Line (PL), Channel Guard (CG), Quiet Tone (QT) DPL = Motorola Digital Private Line (DPL). Motorola trademarked the DPL name, so other radio manufacturers have to call it something different.

What are CTCSS and DCS If you are programming repeaters into your radio or working certain satellites, you likely encountered the above. This is not a full background or technical paper on either CTCSS or CDS but it has enough to get you to understand them and get going.

Incidentally, there is/was a digital variation of CTCSS developed much later called Digital Controlled Squelch (DCS). Relatively rare, the 83 or 104 ‘tones’ or ‘codes’ that system used were digitally generated using 23-bit group addresses or ‘codewords’ using FSK FM carrier modulation. DCS DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) is digital data or code word that is transmitted with the voice audio.

CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) uses sub-audible (below 300 Hz, not necessarily inaudible) tones to activate coded receivers. PL (Private Line) is Motorola's trademarked name for this system. General Electric calls theirs CG (Channel Guard). DCS (Digital-Coded Squelch) uses a 23-bit digital pattern to activate coded receivers.

A “Split Tone” mode also allows operation on systems where CTCSS and DCS CTCSS uses a sub-audible tone transmitted on the signal of the transmitter trying to access the repeater. The amateur radio repeater has a very sharp filter to detect whether the exact tone is present. It will also remove it before transmitting the required audio.
