The category that angiolipoma belongs to, lipoma, is a benign tumor made of a combination of fat deposits referred to as adipose tissue. It is considered the most common form of soft tissue growth. Unlike most lipomas, however, angiolipoma is painful. Doctors may advise patients on the treatment options for an angiolipoma that causes pain.

Angiolipomas (also sometimes known as haemangiolipomas, vascular lipomas , and fibromyolipomas) are rare soft tissue tumors composed of mature adipocytes and vessels. They can occur essentially anywhere and can be subclassified into infiltrating and non-infiltrating variants 1 . Infiltrating (intramuscular) angiolipoma is no longer acceptable terminology because it represents a different lesion (Stanford University: Lipoma [Accessed 6 September 2018]) May be an intramuscular large vessel hemangioma in which muscle has been replaced by fat (J Pediatr Orthop 1986;6:172) Angiomyolipomas are the most common benign tumour of the kidney. Although regarded as benign, angiomyolipomas may grow such that kidney function is impaired or the blood vessels may dilate and burst, leading to bleeding. Angiomyolipomas are strongly associated with the genetic disease Tuberous Sclerosis, in which most individuals have several Angiomyolipomas affecting both kidneys. They are also commonly found in women with the rare lung disease lymphangioleiomyomatosis (Lipoma is spelled lypoma in Europe.) Lipomas are fatty lumps, bumps and tumors.

Angiolipomas differ from lipomas in that they have more blood Angiolipomas may be difficult to distinguish from other fatty tumours such as lipoma on clinical examination. Angiolipoma can be distinguished histologically, following biopsy, by the finding of vessels (particularly if thrombosed) within a proliferation of mature fat cells. See DermNet's page on the histopathology of angiolipoma. Lipomas are most common on the shoulders, neck, trunk and arms, but they can occur anywhere on the body where fat tissue is present.

Objective: The relative utility of various preoperative diagnostic imaging modalities, including PET (utilizing FDG and FMT), CT, and MR imaging, for evaluation of lipoma and liposarcoma, especially well-differentiated liposarcoma, was investigated. Methods: Imaging findings in 32 patients with histopathologically documented lipoma, including one with fibrolipoma and one with angiolipoma, and Although in many cases the diagnosis of simple lipoma or liposarcoma appears obvious, there are many instances where considerable overlap in the imaging features is present. Indeed, a recent study estimated that experienced observers using MRI have a 69% chance of rendering the correct diagnosis when attempting to distinguish between lipoma and a well differentiated liposarcoma 20 .

Strictly speaking, a lipoma is a benign growth and a liposarcoma is malignant (ie, cancer). There has always been some concern that lipomas, which are common, can contain or progress to liposarcoma. The exact likelihood of this is not clear, but it may well be less than some of the figures (as much as 5%) that have been quoted.

angiolipomas from 18 patients (angiolipoma group) and 47 superficial lipomas from 43 patients (superficial lipoma group) were enrolled in our study for a comparison of their sonographic findings (Figure 1).

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is an uncommon soft tissue neoplasm that may provide diagnostic difficulty to the histopathologist. Four retrospectively identified SCLs were evaluated immunohistochemically with a broad panel of antibodies (CD34, factor XIIIa, S-100, actin and factor VIII).

Angiolipoma is a less common form of lipoma or a benign lump of fatty tissue. An angiolipoma is most commonly found on the forearm. Angiolipomas differ from lipomas in that they have more blood vessels running through them and they are more likely to be painful. The Angiolipoma tumors are mostly seen in people between 40 and 60 years of age. You will rarely find angiolipoma in children.

Angiolipoma is also known as Telangiectatic Lipoma or Lipoma Cavernosum.
